Two mail order books by J. William Turner, Dangerous Days and Blades. Try Blades first. It is about a teen boy who learns to fly helicopters, and is the shorter of the two. If you like then get Dangerous Days, which is about the traumatic teenage years of three of the adult characters in Blades
