How do I play Audio And Video{mp3,wma,wav,mpg,dat,avi} in my internet-less Ubuntu?

I just installed Ubuntu 8 04 on my Desktop Intel machine , just like the other Linux distros I cannot play Video and audio,I cannot get them directly from the internet(i have no internet(i'm in Africa)),and i am completely A newbie on unix/linux
