Getting a shetland off lead?

So he sounds a little green under saddle. Get on him yourself for a little while. Then, if he's still acting up when you're on the ground, put an experienced rider on him and every time he comes near you, crack a lunge whip at your side. Give him lots of praise every time he stays away from you. He'll learn, he just doesn't know any better yet.
